Waimate Flooding 17th June 2013
Waimate District Councils overview of yesterday’s flood event saw much emphasis on assessment and management of situations as they arose; in particular evacuations with several families electing to self-evacuate and one formal evacuation of two people requiring Fire and Police to attend.
Waimate District Council Roading responded to situations as they developed throughout the day. Emphasis was on monitoring river levels of the Waihao and Pareora rivers to assess if further evacuations were required.
Civil Defence Emergency Management Co-ordinator Hilary Botting praised the effort of sector post wardens who provided invaluable information throughout the day on the state of rivers and roads in their areas and also the assistance of emergency services including Fire and Police.
There is now an assessment of the damage to infrastructure which will be reported back to Council for future planning, this includes Bradshaws Bridge.
Hilary advises road conditions are still problematic and therefore urges driver to drive to conditions and be mindful of possible delays.
