What Do We Do Now?
Work in partnership with other local authorities in the South Canterbury Rural Fire District, to maintain a shared response system of equipment and fire fighters.
Tasks are the routine matters that Council will attend to every year, in order to maintain service levels set in agreement with our community.
- Work in partnership with our neighbours in South Canterbury Rural Fire District to maintain communications and emergency response.
- Fund the South Canterbury Rural-Fire Service jointly with Timaru and Mackenzie districts and forestry operators.
- Train personal to various levels of competency to NZQA standards.
- Ensure personal are familiar with the Forest and Rural Fires Act.

In order to enhance community safety and remove barriers to economic development, to protect property, people and livestock against fire, and to manage communications with regard to fire season status.

To ensure that fire season status information is published in local newspapers in a timely fashion, and that fire season status is published on Council website promptly.
To ensure communication between South Canterbury Rural Fire Officers and Waimate District Council is sufficient to give Council staff awareness of fire ban status at all times.
To fully participate in South Canterbury Rural Fire District administration to attend all meetings; effective lobbying for cost sharing.
