Fire Information

Our neighbours (Timaru & Mackenzie) form South Canterbury Rural Fire District with Waimate and help to maintain communications and emergency response as well as equipment and fire fighters.

The funding is made up from the members of South Canterbury Rural Fire District and the forestry owners.

Council also make sure that personal is trained to various levels of compentency to NZQA standards and are familiar with the Forest and Rural Fires Act.

Council offer this service to enhance community safety and remove barriers to ecomonic development. It also helps to protect property, people and livestock against fire and to manage communications with regard to fire season status.

 

Fire Restrictions

The requirement of the control measure is that you must obtain a permit to light a fire. There are some exceptions.

Backyard Burning

A ban on outdoor burning is in place on all residential properties in Canterbury, a fine of $300 may be imposed.  View link below for more information.
