What Do We Do Now?

There are five Cemeteries in the Waimate District. One in the Hakataramea area, which is run by the local community board. Two are closed for interments at Glenavy, 0.3462ha and Morven, 0.814ha cemeteries, but are  maintained by the District Council. The two active cemeteries are in Otaio on 0.3495 ha and Waimate on 4.514 ha.

Average interments per year are 55.

Tasks

Tasks are the routine matters that Council will attend to every year, in order to maintain service levels set in agreement with our community.

  • Provide interment facilities to serve the needs of our community.
  • Maintain the Waimate Cemeteries to agreed service levels.
  • Provide Cemeteries that cater for differing burial requirements based on religious association and services in Armed Forces.

Why Do We Do It?

Local Authorities are required through the Burial and Cremation Act 1964 to provide cemeteries for their communities.

To provide an interment facility to service the needs of the community.

Our Service Levels

Open to the public 7 days a week.

To maintain and upgrade to contract specifications.

A private contractor carries out maintenance at $36,000 per year.

Other costs including labour are estimated at $4,500.
