There is no tsunami threat to New Zealand following the magnitude 7.4 earthquake in the Solomon Islands.
However, people should expect stronger and unusual currents on the coast, especially in harbours or estuaries.
People in boats or at the beach, should be particularly careful. The stronger and unusual currents are likely to last all day.

PERMANENT BOIL WATER NOTICE
CANNINGTON – MOTUKAIKA
A Permanent Boil Water Notice has been issued for both the Waihaorunga and Cannington - Motukaika Rural Water Schemes.
Both schemes are in the process of assessing upgrade options to comply with the New Zealand Drinking Water Standards 2005 (Revised 2008) and until such time as to the implementation of real-time monitoring of the schemes, or the selection of an appropriate way forward, this notice will remain in place indefinitely.
There will be no operational changes to the scheme and Council will continue to test the scheme on a weekly basis.
