Waimate can now boast a diversity of mountain bike trails both in and around the town itself catering for all abilities.
Pentland Traverse: West of Waimate 60km round trip from Waihao Forks Hotel. Please note that landowners are happy for you to use this trail but it will be closed during October and possibly November due to lambing. Track conditions 60% gravel.
Kinbrace Trail: West of Waimate 80km. Pentland Hills/Moorland Settlement Road/Wrights Crossing/Meyers Pass Road/Pentland Hills. Travel west through Waimate joining up with Highway 82 signposted Kurow. From Waihao Forks hotel continue on turning right onto Serpentine Valley Road then onto Pentland Hills Road. Track conditions 60% gravel.
Meyers Pass Trail: West of Waimate 40km round trip Pentland Hills/Meyers Pass. Track conditions gravel.
An interesting alterntive to this ride is called 'Pub to Pub' ride. 55km one way ride. Leaving Waihao Forks Hotel travelling the Pentland Hills/Meyers Pass trail/McHenry's Road arriving at the Hakataramea Hotel.
Clarksfield Road: West of Waimate 18.5km from end to end. From Highway 82 turn onto Elephant Hill Road then onto Clarkesfield Road. Stay on THIS road (avoiding Clarkesfield Back Road). Track conditions 90% metal.
Hakataramea Pass Trail: West of Waimate Hakataramea/MacKenzie Pass/Burkes Pass 100km. This trail offers spectacular views of Mt Cook, the alps and high country scenery. Track conditions mostly unsealed.
Whitehorse Trail: Waimate township 6.2km return from Te Kiteroa car park to top of the White Horse. Grade 4+ uphill! Head up Mill Road, left onto Point Bush Road (follow signs for Waimate Walkway). Parking area outside Te Kiteroa is also start of the walkway to your left. At the main gate cross the stile ride straight ahead following directional markers to second stile. Markers direct you to the track entrance to your left.
