South Canterbury Rural Assistance Trust

"SCRAT" has been formed particularly with rural needs in mind and integrates into the overall Civil Defence Emergency Management apparatus.

South Canterbury Rural Assistance Trust is a voluntary organisation that mobilises during an adverse climatic or other event to co-ordinate assistance for the rural community.

Their focus is stock welfare. Depending on the type of adverse event, their role is to organise, distribute, and manage the resources needed to minimise farmers' losses.

In times of adversity farming can have its own unique challenges and difficulties.

Adrenalin, panic and confusion affect both humans and animals.

The survival instincts of livestock can make normal handling techniques ineffective.

Stock water supplies may be less secure.

Relative isolation may have negative consequences.
