Public Alerting

Civil Defence Emergency Management Public Alerting Information

If the earthquake is long or strong be gone from beaches and tsunami evacuation zones including coastal rivers – the earthquake is the warning as any public messaging will be not quick enough in some/most cases. Having said that we do have two public alerting systems which we use depending on nature of event:

OPTN Text Service

What is it?

A FREE text alert for* mobile phone users from registered Councils.

How do I opt in?

TXT  ‘OPTNWECD’ to 0061 4277 92934

It’s that easy! You will then receive alerts from the council enabling you to get the most up to date info.

How do I opt out?

If at any point you want to unsubscribe you simply txt OPTXWECD to 0061 4277 92934

Will my number stay private?

Yes. Only Optn Limited has access to mobile numbers, please view our Privacy Statement for full details.

How much does it cost?

All messages received are FREE! (no charge to the mobile)

The cost to Optn (opt-in) and optx (opt -out) via mobile phone will be charged accordingly by your provider e.g Vodafone etc.

Red Cross Hazard Mobile App

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies develop and maintain a hazard and public alerting mobile phone application called Hazards. The public can download Hazards and they will start to receive public alerts. The content of Hazards is tailored to cover New Zealand hazards and ensure advice is consistent with national guidance in Working from the same page – consistent messages for CDEM (2010).

There are two types of alerts sent through the app

1. Automatic feed from agency. These are automatic alerts or notifications produced by an agency through their regular processes – these include the MetService (weather) and GeoNet (earthquakes).

2. General notification. These are specific messages created by an agency in response to a specific event and sent to the Hazards app.

Councils and the Regional Office use the Storm CMS (Content Management System) to generate and send General Notifications to the public via the Hazards app

Red Cross Hazard App (works on Apple and Android smart phones):
