Waimate District Council appoints new Chief Executive

Stuart Duncan has been appointed Waimate District Council's new Chief Executive and will begin his new role on 7 February 2017.

Announcing his appointment, Mayor Craig Rowley says Stuart brings considerable experience in leadership, local government, community engagement, asset management, town planning and project management.

Stuart has a passion for economic development and "vows to work closely with the elected members and local businesses to attract more residents and visitors by creating 'New Zealand's most liveable' location".

Promising stable leadership and improved communication, Stuart says his energy will be spent developing the right strategies and policies and a tangible walk down the street difference.

Mayor Craig says Stuart’s experience and skills will be a valuable contribution to the Waimate District Economic Development Strategy that Council is in the process of developing.

Stuart is excited about returning to New Zealand and will be relocating to Waimate from Australia’s Northern Territory where he is currently the Chief Executive Officer of Victoria Daly Regional Council.

Mayor Craig says "we look forward to welcoming Stuart and his family to our wonderful district and to the Council team".

Stuart will replace Bede Carran who is taking up the role of Chief Executive at Timaru District Council on 5 December 2016.

Biography for Stuart Duncan

Originally from Whanganui, Stuart moved to Cairns, Queensland, from New Zealand in early 1988. In 1997 he joined the Department of Natural Resources and Mines and remained with the Department for five years as the Principle Technical Officer providing expert governance, finance, infrastructure and asset management advice to 32 Local Governments in North Queensland.

Stuart has also held many directorship positions including:

* Queensland Local Government Grants Commission
* Northern Territory Planning Commission
* Northern Territory Local Government Disciplinary Committee
* Katherine Regional Economic Development Committee

Stuart has 15 years’ experience as the Chief Executive of medium-sized Local Government Councils in Australia with a workforce between 300 to 700 employees, and takes a very keen personal interest in the broader community.

Stuart has a partner, Carol, and son Angus (12) who are very excited by this opportunity and will relocate to Waimate in January 2017.
