Waimate Mayor shows off his cooking style in front of an audience to win the Rural Women Mayoral Cook-off Challenge in Ashburton on Tuesday.

The Mayoral Pancake Cook-Off between four Canterbury Mayors was organised by the Canterbury Rural Women Area Committee as part of Canterbury Rural Women Week, and held at the public outdoor East Street chequerboard in Ashburton.

Mayor Rowley drew on his father-of-seven cooking experience to take out the competition from fellow rural Mayors Graham Smith of Mackenzie, Donna Favel of Ashburton and Hurunui Mayor Winton Dalley.

The Mayors were given the recipe and everything they needed to create their special ‘x’ factor pancakes, and Rural Women spokesperson Sandra Curd reported there was plenty of friendly Mayoral ‘rivalry’ going on including the pinching and swapping of ingredients between Mayoral tables.

Mayor Rowley received a copy of Rural Women anthology ‘Ragwort and Thistles’, and recipe book ‘A Good Harvest’ for his trouble, which he has donated to the Waimate library for the community to enjoy.
