Civil Defence Earthquake & Tsunami Emergency Information
Published: 05 Dec 2016
To help our community be prepared for emergencies we have some useful links for you to follow. Most importantly, individuals, families and communities must plan for themselves to get ready and get thru for at least the first 72 hours. To help you do this, please follow this link: www.happens.nz. To help in your planning around tsunami risk please follow the below link to Canterbury’s tsunami evacuation zones: http://ecan.maps.arcgis.com/apps/Minimalist/index.html?appid=591062afb6b542abb247cc8d15a64855
If the earthquake is long or strong be gone from beaches and tsunami evacuation zones including coastal rivers – the earthquake is the warning as any public messaging will be not quick enough in some/most cases. Having said that we do have two public alerting systems which we use depending on nature of event:
1. OPTN text service http://www.optn.co.nz/civil-defence/ or text WECD to 0061427792934.
2. Red Cross Hazard App (works on Apple and Android smart phones): https://www.redcross.org.nz/what-we-do/in-new-zealand/disaster-management/hazard-app/
In a national (large scale) event earthquake or tsunami - turn on your radio and listen to Radio NZ National station 101.1 FM & 988 AM. For events in our district listen to Port FM 93.1 FM.
