Hook Waituna Rural Water Scheme water conservation notice
Consumers on the Hook Waituna Rural Water Scheme are asked to continue to monitor water usage and conserve water where possible. This is due to dry conditions and low flow at the Hook Waituna Rural Water Scheme intake.
Our team have been monitoring flows at the Hook Waituna Rural Water Scheme intake, and on Thursday 7 March staff noticed a significant reduction in flow. This has impacted the ability to abstract water from the Hook River.
Since then, staff have been undertaking works to improve the scheme intake and manage distribution. One of the solutions was to divert water from the Waimate Urban Water Supply to a portion of the Hook Waituna Rural Water Scheme.
We have also put pumps in place at the intake to improve abstraction and continuity of supply. However, we are still experiencing low flow at the Hook River.
Therefore, it is still recommended that the watering of gardens with scheme water is to be limited to hand watering in the evenings only and request no watering of lawns or use of garden sprinklers.
Please repair any leaking pipes, taps, toilet cisterns, hoses, and other associated plumbing, as well as keeping an eye on any troughs required for stock.
Please regularly check your water reserves. A good way to do this is to look at installing water level indicators, flags, or electronic monitoring.
Council also recommends four days water storage of your supplied allocation.
If you do have alternative access to stock water, please consider using it. Any reduction in demand would relieve pressure on the scheme and be of great assistance.
Please immediately report any water leaks on the rural water schemes to Council on (03) 689 0000.
