Nominations Sought for Waimate District's Civic Awards

Nominations have opened for the Waimate District’s 2026 Civic Awards, which recognise outstanding voluntary service across the district. The awards will be presented at a ceremony on 14 October 2026.

The awards are the community’s opportunity to acknowledge the many residents who contribute quietly and consistently to local causes, organisations, and community projects.

Mayor Craig Rowley says volunteers play a vital role in the district’s wellbeing.

“Behind every thriving community are people who quietly give their time, energy, and heart,” he says. “They don’t seek the spotlight, but these awards let us shine a light on their dedication and show our gratitude.”

Nominations are invited in three categories: Individual (adult), Group/Organisation, and Youth.

Mayor Rowley encourages everyone across the district to think about who deserves recognition and to submit a nomination.

The awards, normally held earlier in the year, were postponed due to a lower number of nominations than expected. All nominations received before the postponement will automatically be carried forward. The committee is hoping for more submissions before nominations close at 4pm on Tuesday 1 September 2026.

“I also encourage those whose nominations were unsuccessful in previous years to resubmit them this year,” adds Mayor Rowley.

Last year’s recipients were Mavis Andrew, Barry O’Neill, Vince Thompson and Raewyn Williams in the Individual category, Georgia Soper in the Youth category, and Waimate Trackways and the Waimate Highland Pipe Band in the Group/Organisation category.
