142nd Waimate Caledonian Games Sports Event
29th Jan 2017 9:00am-3:00pm at Victoria Park, Queen St, Waimate
Waimate staged its first Highland Games in 1875 and by that time Caledonian Societies were spread across New Zealand with scarcely a town south of the Rangitata where athletic festivals were not held.
Cash prizes attracted distinguished competitors from across New Zealand and Australia with crowds flocking to the games.
Waimate Caledonian Games are celebrating their 141st anniversary. They have had games on every year since 1875 and is the longest running event in the Waimate District with cycling, skating, highland dancing, piping and athletic events.
The Caledonian Society laid down one of the first banked clay tracks in the South Island not long after Victoria Park was opened. Later in early 1930s this was replace by an asphalt track.
By 1999 the track had deteriorated significantly, so the Caledonian Society fought hard to rebuild the track adding a new surrounding fence.
