Waimate District Council
Norman Kirk Memorial Swimming Pool Party
We estimated 200 children and adults attended the recent ‘Pool Party’ where we launched our new ‘pool toy’ – the massive floating crocodile that was generously partially donated by the Morven Recreation Reserves Management Committee. While I was unable to attend, the Mayoress, Deputy Mayor, our Chief Executive and some staff were kept busy on the barbeque feeding hungry youngsters.
Ex Cyclone Gaita
Fortunately our district came off with less damage than many other districts from flooding caused by ex Cyclone Gita. We did have widespread scouring over our roading network and this repair work (estimated at around $30,000) will be incorporated into our maintenance programme over the next few weeks.
At our Council meeting last Tuesday I had the pleasure of conducting the Citizenship Ceremony of ten new citizens to the Waimate District. Congratulations to Robert and Carolyn Gibson (Australian nationality), Julie Simpson and Sally Anne Boyd (British nationality), Catharina Engelina de Paauw-Fontein (Dutch nationality) and Anthony, Amanda, Matthew, Taegyn, Sarah Hedgcock (South African nationality). It was interesting to hear from them how they are enjoying living in our district and I wish them all the best for their future as New Zealand citizens. We also had the pleasure of having the senior members of St Patrick’s School Choir to lead us in the National Anthem and they performed their school song for us which added to this special ceremony.
