Norman Kirk Swimming Pool
The pool opened for the season on 24 October and staff are receiving very positive feedback for both the new showers as well as for the new ramp for access to and from the pool.  Early morning and mid-day swimming is very popular with good numbers attending and enjoying the average temperature range of around 26 to 28°Celcius.

Community Events
Congratulations to the organising committees of a number of major local events held recently such as Waimate Shears, Waimate 50, Bookarama, and Centrewood Fete. It is great to see so many visitors in our District attending these events which I know take an enormous amount of time and commitment from a large group of volunteers.

St Marys Church Restoration Project Fundraising Launch
I enjoyed attending the launch of the $31,500 fundraising campaign that will see all the windows in the St Mary’s iconic historic church at Esk Valley restored and kept safe for generations to come. At a time when we see many churches being demolished around the country or sold off to become used in other ways - it is heartening to see this restoration get underway and I congratulate the Waimate District Cooperating Venture for their foresight and drive.

2018 Civic Awards
Applications are now open for the 2018 Waimate District Civic Awards. This annual scheme recognises and thanks our unsung heroes in our District for their selfless voluntary service – and there are three categories ‘Individual’, ‘Youth’ and ‘Group/Organisation’. These Civic Awards are now in their 8th year and we still have plenty of people out there giving up their time in all sorts of different ways. Application forms can be picked up from Council’s office, Library, Information Centre or downloaded from our website.
