A new website and social media campaign promoting the Waimate District is a step closer, with the Waimate District Council awarding the contract to a team of local business people.

Project manager Jo Sutherland, marketing consultant and graphic designer Kate O’Connell, and writer Sue Francis will work with the Council and the community to promote the Waimate District to local, national and international markets.

Announcing the contract, Mayor Craig Rowley said the project was part of Council’s Our District. Our Future. Economic Development Strategy. The initial round of community engagement held earlier this year had identified marketing and promotion as an immediate priority.

“We listened to what people had to say, and we’ve got underway. Our goal is a website that showcases Waimate District’s positive, pro-active approach, where people work together to achieve growth and positive outcomes.”

“Ultimately what we are all aiming for is more traffic to our tourism operators, accommodation and hospitality providers; increased attendance at our events and local attractions; and more enquiries to our local businesses. We want to encourage new businesses to open up across the District, and new tourism ventures to start.”

Jo Sutherland said she, O’Connell, and Francis, were proud to be part of the team helping promote the District.
The first phase of the project was developing a District-wide brand that could be used by businesses, schools and the community, and creating the new website.

“We’ll be surveying the community first-up for their ideas about content for the website. This will happen alongside Council’s art competition that’s kickstarting the search for our new icon and brand.”

The website would include a business directory, tourism blogs, and showcase the work of local photographers. It would be linked to a social media campaign.

“Along with the focus on growing visitor numbers, we also want to showcase the many great stories the Waimate District has to tell – from people in the community, our existing businesses, and ventures that are growing and expanding. The site will promote the opportunities here, and have plenty of space to expand,” she said.

“Our District has a great future, and we’re proud to be part of that.”
