Council, like many other Councils around the country, hosts citizenship ceremonies, and celebrates people choosing to adopt New Zealand as their home by becoming New Zealand citizens.
Council works with government agency, Department of Internal Affairs, to organise and preside over citizenship ceremonies.
Candidates are formally invited to attend the ceremony and will swear an oath or affirmation of allegiance to King Charles III and observe the laws of New Zealand.
Ceremonies are special occasions for new citizens – whether they are individuals or families. They are welcomed specifically to the Waimate District by the Mayor and are given a small gift.
Following a speech by the Mayor, the newly sworn-in citizens, their supporters, and guests view a brief DVD about New Zealand containing messages from the Governor General and Minister of Internal Affairs. They join the Mayor and Councillors in singing the New Zealand national anthem, “God Defend New Zealand” before enjoying light refreshments.
