Candidates for the 2025 Waimate District Local Elections Confirmed

As the nomination period for the 2025 local government elections has closed, 15 candidates have put themselves forward for the Waimate District.

For the first time in 18 years, Waimate District has three candidates for the Mayoralty; Craig Rowley, Rick Stevens and Sharyn Cain.

The Hakataramea-Waihaorunga Ward received two candidates for one vacancy: Margaret Wells and Paul Harrison.

The Pareora-Otaio-Makikihi Ward received three candidates for two vacancies: Jon Bird, Sandy McAlwee and Stacey Hall.

The Waimate Ward received six candidates for four vacancies: Brent Percy, Jakki Guilford, John Begg, Peter David Paterson, Rick Stevens and Shane Gregoran.

Lisa Small will be elected unopposed to the Lower Waihao Ward.

Council Chief Executive Stuart Duncan has welcomed the district’s response to this year’s election. He says that it is important that the public have choices around who represents them. It is reflection of a healthy and engaged democracy.

“Local government has for some time been undergoing significant changes and more are on their way. It is encouraging to see passionate individuals stepping forward to lead our district through testing times. Our district has always welcomed diverse and bold ideas”.
