New Zealand’s road rules are changing from today, with four new lane use rules coming into effect. The changes are intended to make it safer and clearer for everyone sharing our roads, cycle lanes and footpaths.
The key changes are:
- Children cycling on footpaths
Children aged 12 years and under can now ride bikes on footpaths, and an older rider can accompany them for safety. The new rule does not provide general permission for everyone to cycle on footpaths. - 1.5 metre passing distance
Drivers must leave at least 1.5 metres when passing cyclists, horse riders and other non-motor-vehicle road users travelling in the same direction and lane. If you cannot pass safely, slow down and wait until it is safe to do so. - E-scooters in cycle lanes
E-scooters that are not considered motor vehicles can now be ridden in cycle lanes. - Giving way to buses
On roads with a speed limit of 60 km/h or less, road users must give way to buses pulling out from bus stops.
