Waimate District Council is upgrading the Cannington-Motukaika and Waihaorunga Mixed-Use Rural Water Supplies to ensure safe drinking water is available to all consumers.
With the introduction of the Water Services (Mixed-Use Rural) Drinking Water Acceptable Solution (the Acceptable Solution) in 2025, the option to utilise end-point treatment became a viable and cost-effective solution for these small supplies.
End-point treatment can be better defined as a small treatment plant that treats water used within a dwelling or workplace and consists of cartridge filtration and UV disinfection. Equipment must have capacity to meet the instantaneous peak demand which is typically relatively low for residential properties.
End-point treatment devices only treat water used for personal consumption and residential use. Allocations for stock water use remain untreated aside from residual chlorination to protect the network from backflow risk.
As the water supplier, Waimate District Council is committed to achieving compliance with the Water Services Act 2021 either directly or through the Acceptable Solution. Additionally, we have made a commitment to the Water Services Authority that this will occur prior to the 2027/28 financial year.
