I hope you’ve all had the chance to rest, reconnect, and enjoy what makes our district such a special place. As we settle into 2026, it’s time to look ahead at what’s coming our way. Just as we wrapped up decisions around Local Water Done Well, the Government announced the most wide-ranging reforms for local government in recent memory.
Green light for Water Services Committee
Council has approved the establishment of a Water Services Committee (WSC), marking a major step forward in how we manage the district’s water services.
Resealing programme under way
Council’s annual road resealing programme has begun and is due for completion in the second week of March, weather permitting. Around 37 kilometres of resealing work will be delivered during this time with approximately 10% on urban streets and 90% on rural roads.
Rates capping explained
At the end of December, the Government announced a series of proposed changes that could significantly reshape local government. One of those proposals is rates capping, which would set a limit on how much councils can increase rates each year.
