Successful applicants for the latest round of the Creative Communities Scheme funding have been announced for the Waimate District with $25,730 being awarded between 11 groups and individuals. Funded by Creative New Zealand and delivered in partnership with the Council, the grants go towards local arts and culture projects.
The recipients are:
• Waimate Poetry Group: $150 towards the provision of a poetry workshop.
• Esther Wolters: $1,000 towards 19 hours of Woolsters Hook & Learn Crochet workshops.
• Damien McNamara: $500 towards celebrating ‘Makariki at Waihao Marae’ with a visual arts exhibition.
• The Southern Canterbury A&P Association: $450 to help fund anA&P Show Creative Recycled BuiltCompetition for young people.
• Waimate Community Church: $6,400 towards the running of Christmas in the Square, a free community celebration held annually.
• Craig Robertson: $1,500 to help fund the provision of a weekend photography workshop.
• Glenavy School: $630 towards their production of Shrek the Musical.
• Jane Scott: $3,000 towards a community-created sculpture to be installed on the Waimate Trail.
• Lyn Hewitson: $3,000 towards a Butterfly Tree sculpture for the Waimate Trail, which also has a community component.
• Bill Scott: $7,000 towards the creation of the Waimate Old Railway Mural to be installed on the fence beside the Norman Kirk Memorial Swimming Pool. The project will include community participation.
• Michael Bajko: $2,000 towards the provision of stone carving workshops at the Waimate Art Gallery.
Council receives applications on a six-monthly basis, typically in March and September each year. Each funding round is advertised when it becomes available.
