Council has approved trialling winter camping at the Waitangi East campground, responding to growing interest from the public.
Traditionally, the lakes campgrounds close over winter, with access limited to freedom campers in certified self-contained vehicles. However, staff received a number of requests during the current camping season from people wanting to camp at the lakes during the colder months. Many of these requests highlighted the lakes’ suitability for winter use, with campers pointing to favourable winter weather and the fact that fishing and boating activities continue year-round.
The trial will run from 4 May to 30 August 2026, closing two weeks ahead of the next summer season to allow time for preparation.
During the trial:
- One toilet block will remain open and be cleaned regularly
- No rubbish collection will be provided
- The site will be overseen by the Lakes Supervisor.
Because fewer services will be available, camping fees have been reduced:
- $10 per adult/couple per night
- $5 per child (ages 5–15 years old) per night
- Free for children under five years.
The lakes camping activity is not rates funded, and Council sees winter camping as an opportunity to make better use of existing infrastructure and staff while potentially increasing off-season income.
Mayor Craig Rowley praised staff for thinking outside the box. He said, “Winter camping, along with the caravan storage we started last year ensures that our facilities are being utilised well.”
The Mayor has asked staff to report to Council with data at the end of the trial so that further decisions can be made.
