Successful applicants for the latest round of two Council grants have been announced with $2,000 of funding going to heritage projects and $10,000 to recreational track improvements.
Heritage Grant
Waimate Edwardian Heritage Group was awarded $1,000 for the restoration of a rotting wall of the 1920s Langdale building (which is otherwise sound), one of the Edwardian buildings on display at Bushtown. The building is significant not only for its age and history, but also because it is the site of a mural depicting early bush covered hills of Waimate.
Becs Murray Photography Ltd was awarded $1,000 to assist with the creation of a comprehensive photographic record of local forms of remembrance. The project will document commemorations and war memorials in community halls, marae, schools, churches and civic memorial sites as well as heritage war memorial trees and commemorative plantings. The resulting archive including copyrights will be gifted to Waimate District Council and the Returned and Services’ Association for non-commercial use.
Recreational Track Grant
Whitehorse MTB Riders Inc was awarded $10,000 to continue work on upgrading the Whitehorse Big Easy track, focusing on the section below the creek bridge. This section requires cut and fill work, along with resurfacing to bring the trail in line with national Grade 2 specification. This section is also prone to damage during flooding of the creek so part of the track will be re-routed to higher ground. This work will help make the climb to the White Horse Monument more accessible and enjoyable for a wide range of users.
Council receives applications for the Heritage Grant and Recreational Track Grant in February and August each year. We will advertise when the next round opens.
