Last Tuesday, Council held the first workshop for the 2027–2037 Long Term Plan (LTP). Every LTP is important, but this one will be among the most significant and challenging we have developed. We are planning for the future of our district at a time of considerable uncertainty.
Council has provided staff with clear direction: focus on the essentials, get them right, and ensure that our residents are part of the journey.
Your voice will be vital as we work through the issues ahead. The suite of Government reforms will place real pressure on Council’s finances and resourcing, and we are committed to advocating strongly on your behalf. We will continue to push for our fair share of funding so that the burden does not fall unfairly on ratepayers.
I also want to take a moment to acknowledge the ongoing conflict in the Middle East and the ripple effects being felt around the world. The resulting disruption to supply chains, rising fuel and energy costs, and increasing prices for core infrastructure materials including items as basic as pipes, are already impacting Council operations and our community. Even if the conflict were to end soon, the flow‑on effects will be felt for some time.
On a brighter note, our district was proud to host the NZ Disc Golf National Championships at Knottingley Park & Arboretum. It was fantastic to see such enthusiastic participation and strong community support. My congratulations go to all competitors, and my sincere thanks to everyone involved in making the event a success. The teamwork between Council staff and the Waimate Disc Golf Club was evident, and events like this highlight the value of our investment in parks and open spaces. They bring people together, showcase our district, and reinforce what makes Waimate such a special place to live.
