It's been 40 years since the devastating floods of March 1986, which caused widespread damage across our region. Waimate District – known then as Waimate County – experienced significant impacts, with major damage to roads, local transport routes, and property. The aftermath left the region facing repair bills totalling millions of dollars, and the effects were felt in communities including Makikihi, Hakataramea, Morven, and areas surrounding the Waihao and Pareora rivers.
Although the disaster may now feel like a distant memory, the threat of future flooding remains very real. It is not a matter of if, but when. That’s why Council continues to work hard to stay prepared for emergencies through ongoing staff training, community engagement, and ensuring resources are available for everyone to be prepared.
On 12 March, Council staff took part in a training exercise based on the events of the 1986 floods. Experts from Environment Canterbury, Timaru District Council, and the Canterbury Civil Defence Management Group joined the session – reinforcing the importance of collaboration when responding to large‑scale emergencies.
