Council has committed funds to help the Southern Canterbury A&P Association upgrade the Shears Pavilion.
In October 2025 Council received correspondence requesting $40,000 towards a refurbishment project that is expected to cost more than $139,000. An outline of the proposed works includes.
- An electrical upgrade to replace and update electrical infrastructure dating back to the 1950s.
- An extension to provide additional storage space as the Pavilion has exceeded its capacity.
- A new heating solution suited to a 960 square metre space to replace the current inadequate system and ensure the community can use the Pavilion year-round.
On 16 December 2025, Council voted to award the full $40,000 to the project.
The funds will come from Council’s Subdivision Contribution Reserve Fund, which is separate from rates. It is drawn from residential subdivision and developments in the district to fund projects which increase the range of public open space and recreation areas and facilities that meet the needs of residents and visitors to the district.
The request meets the criteria of the fund and Council is happy to support the maintenance of an important agricultural building. The Pavilion is used by a range of clubs and for a variety of community events including, of course, the Waimate Shears, a highlight on the district’s event calendar.
