A recent spate of deliberate damage to public property is concerning. Council’s budgets are already stretched and there is little in reserve to fix up wilful damage. It is disappointing and unfair that the reckless acts of a few deprives the rest of the community of hard-earned money, much-needed enjoyment and a sense of safety.
In early July, there were three incidents of vandalism to the public toilets outside the Council building on Queen Street. Later in the month, a four-wheel drive vehicle careened around Knottingley Park and Arboretum causing damage to the soft ground. And, earlier this month, a significant number of spring bulbs were stolen from Victoria Park Gardens.
Most people in our community are grateful for our facilities, have pride in our district and would not dream of doing anything that may cause damage or bring sadness to their fellow citizens.
Unfortunately, there are a few rogue individuals who simply don’t care.
The fact that Waimate is such a close-knit community can help if everyone stays vigilant. Please report any concerns to Council and the police. We really appreciate your help in this matter.
