Traffic control upgrades have recently been installed at several intersections around Waimate township to improve road safety and traffic flow. These changes aim to reduce driver confusion, enhance visibility, and respond to long-standing community concerns.
What’s changed:
- John Street onto Victoria Terrace – Give Way sign changed to a Stop sign.
- Victoria Terrace onto John Street – Give Way sign added.
- Paul Street onto Wilkin Street – Stop sign added.
These updates were implemented in early July following safety assessments that considered visibility issues, traffic volumes and past near-miss incidents. Waimate has a poor record of intersection-related incidents, and it is expected that clarifying the right-of-way at these intersections will reduce the risk of crashes.
The improvements were completed for under $1,000, demonstrating Council’s commitment to cost-effective, practical safety measures across the district. If you have concerns about other intersections or road signage in your area, please email roading@waimatedc.govt.nz
