Thanks to the funding approved by both Council and the New Zealand Transport Agency, the district now has 3.6km of newly sealed and reconstructed roads. This represents twice the length of end-of life sealed road renewal compared to previous years.
Rooney Earthmoving Ltd completed the work, which falls under Council’s Maintenance and Operations Contract, between December and April. NZTA funding of $557,000 covered more than two thirds of the total cost with Council covering the remaining $263,000.
The work included adding a new gravel basecourse layer and applying a new sealed surface to failed sections of the following roads: Blue Cliffs Road, Grays Crossing, Tawai Ikawai Road, Maori Road, Dog Kennel Road and Glenavy Tawai Road. The road most in need was Blue Cliffs Road in St Andrews which is sporting just short of a kilometre of reconstructed road.
