Local body elections are now just months away with nominations closing on 1 August. I’d like to encourage you to give serious thought to whether you or someone you know could make a real difference for the community by standing for Council. I can attest that civic service is life affirming and rewarding. You might be wondering: What does Council do? Why should I stand? What’s involved in being an elected member? These are some of the questions that will be answered at a special candidate information evening on Wednesday 9 July in the Council Chambers from 5pm to 6:30pm, hosted and led by the Chief Executive.
Another opportunity to serve is on our voluntary Waimate District Civic Awards Committee which meets a few times each year to consider nominations and organise the annual Civic
Awards function. We are seeking to refresh the two service club and two community representatives for a three-year term. If you’re interested in this opportunity, please email karalyn@waimatedc.govt.nz by 4pm on Friday 11 July with a brief explanation of your interest in the volunteer sector and your community background.
