Pedestrians can walk a little more safely, cars can cross more easily, and water can flow more freely after sections of footpath, kerb and stormwater channel have been replaced in Waimate township. The work was completed by Rooney Earthmoving between December 2024 and June 2025.
Asphalt concrete has been used for footpath renewal for comfort, durability and safety. Although chip seal is cheaper initially, asphalt lasts longer with higher user satisfaction. The estimated cost of footpath renewal to date is $178,000 with $54,000 funded by NZTA. Kerb and channel renewal is estimated at $258,000 with $175,000 funded by NZTA.
Deep kerb and channel renewal has been completed on Harris Street (187m from High Street to Manse Street), on George Street (172m from Belt Street to Rhodes Street) and on Rhodes Street (60m from George Street).
Normal kerb and channel renewal and footpath renewal with asphalt concrete has been completed on Belt Street (233m from George Street to Edinburgh Street) and on Opie Street (248m from Grace Street to Mary Street). In St Andrews, 280m of footpath renewal has been completed on State Highway 1.
The completed works are part of an ongoing renewal programme which is subject to funding through the Long Term Plan process and prioritised based on condition and need. With approximately 8,000 metres of kerb and channel rated as poor or very poor, full replacement is expected to take more than 10 years to complete.
